The test method detailed in ASTM D1230-17 evaluates the flammability of consumer textile fabrics. It is suitable for clothing items other than children's pajamas or protective clothing.
Combustion testing is necessary to evaluate factors such as burning time, flame spread time, and flammability. These factors will affect the possibility of clothing erupting in flames and the ability to ignite and cause serious injury.
The two conventional testing methods ASTM D1230-17 and 16 CFR Part 1610, although both cover the flammability test of consumer textile fabrics, their test methods are different:
1) The 16 CFR Part 1610 regulations include a test in which a sample cut from a textile is inserted into a frame and fixed in a special device when exposed to a standard flame under certain conditions. The regulations of the Consumer Product Safety Commission require that apparel fabrics entering the market meet CFR requirements.
2) The test method in ASTM D1230-17 includes inserting the sample into the frame, drying it in an oven and placing it in a desiccator before testing. The frame sample is placed in the flammability tester at a 45-degree angle, and a standardized flame is applied to the surface near the lower end. Record the time it takes for the flame to travel upward at the specified distance.
The ASTM D1230-17 test identified three types of textiles: Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3. These are sorted by flammability, and category 3 textiles are considered unsuitable for clothing.
As the regulations require clothing fabrics to comply with the 16 CFR Part 1610 standard, it is not recommended to use the ASTM D1230-17 test method for acceptance testing of commercial shipments. However, it is useful because it provides a way to test general non-regulated textiles.
Obviously, the regulations in the standard are important for commercial purposes because they can ensure the safety of clothing sold to consumers, but understanding the ASTM D1230 name is also beneficial to consumers. Through the understanding of standards and regulations, people can make safe choices for certain types of clothing.
For example, clothing that is only for one-time use may not take these related guidelines and requirements into consideration. This may lead to the appearance of flammable holiday clothing on the market, posing a potential risk to the safety of children's declarations.
